To Be Held and Not Contained

Marika Swan

Ceremonial/Art is thrilled to present our first solo exhibition of wood block prints and sculpture by Tls-oqui-aht (Tofino, BC) based artist Marika Swan / ƛ̓upinup.

Water, like us, is always in constant motion. A carrier of energy that flows to us, through us and from us. We all find our way to the ocean eventually and any effort to restrain our natural flow is only temporary. Through the acceptance and release of the fullest extent of our beings, we are able to absorb the potency of our emotional experience and lessons. In our surrender, we transform.

Marika Swan/ ƛ̓upinup is a mother, artist, and community arts organizer of Tla-o-qui-aht, Scottish, and Irish descent. Coming from a lineage of wood carvers, she is first to translate this visual language into woodblock relief printmaking. Informed by the rich philosophical and design traditions of her Nuu-chah-nulth lineage, Swan explores themes of reciprocity, interdependence, and personal responsibility.
